A chronicle of one vintage-addict’s journey through charity shops across the globe.
Why am I obsessed with acquiring all things vintage?
I've been addicted to 'old stuff' for as long as I can remember. My grandma ran the Salvation Army op-shop when I was little, and my sister and I were often treated to toys and clothes from the latest batch of donations. I never lost my love for pre-loved junk - in my head, I construct all kinds of narratives about an item's past and love being the next person to carry on its story. And of course, I get a buzz from knowing the things I purchase or find are potentially one-of-a-kind. When I'm hunting for interesting pieces, I try to avoid specialist vintage stores: when the shop owner has already 'discovered' the item and put it in his/her store, half the fun of purchasing an item - that buzz you get from finding a hidden gem - is lost. For me, the anticipation of finding something precious amongst the Primark cast-offs in Oxfam is part of the vintage appeal!
